Joining the World Martial Arts Center is easily one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The community is diverse, supportive and encouraging. The curriculum is challenging and rigorous, yet also well balanced and thoughtfully designed for all levels. Grandmaster Herbert is a plethora of knowledge, with a profound depth of understanding of martial arts. His passion for martial arts and his gift for teaching is reflected in all the instructors who are patient, knowledgeable and of the highest quality.

My two children and I joined WMAC a little over a year ago and I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact that WMAC has brought to our lives. For me, classes are not only a good physical workout, but the routines have helped me develop increased mental clarity and astuteness. WMAC has helped teach my children respect and self-discipline in a fun and nurturing environment. I am most amazed, however, at the profound transformation that has occurred in my son. He started as an excessively shy 6 year old who was too timid to even participate in class and has dramatically transformed into a brave, courageous and self-confident boy. I also highly recommend the Summer Camp. My kids attended last summer and loved it so much they are asking to go again. WMAC is truly a special place. THANK YOU for all that you do!

Senior Instructor Kelly

I have been training at the WMAC for over 20 years under Grand Master Sabumnim David Herbert. The vast level of knowledge, expertise and wisdom he has is unmatched. The curriculum is extremely well rounded and versatile. It includes everything from sparring to joint locks, weapons, throws, kata and grappling, plus much more. The Dojang itself is beautiful, clean and spacious with heavy bags and an array of training equipment accessible to all students. I'm forever grateful to have found the WMAC and that I have been able to train with so many amazing instructors and fellow students for so long.

World Martial Arts was the best gift I gave myself. Improved my physical strength and mental clarity within 1 week. The teachers and community are simply marvelous. JUST DO IT!

I am eternally grateful for the attention, guidance and patience shown to me by WMAC’s exceptional instructors and martial arts community throughout my virtual commuting/ Zoom-ing into classes. WMAC was truly a lifeline for me during pandemic restrictions helping me to not only learn important skills but to manage stress and find balance. I am lucky to have found such a caring community that had online resources (virtual classes and video library) to support me during these difficult times.

Five stars for Grandmaster Herbert and his martial arts school! I have been taking classes via Zoom with Grandmaster Herbert and I have concluded he is an outstanding instructor who generously shares his knowledge, skills, and wisdom. He gives clear and understandable instructions, models the moves, guides our practice, gives each student clear and effective feedback, and makes adjustments as necessary. I have gained confidence, strength, skills and motivation to participate in this workout and to practice the moves between classes. It is a pleasure to learn from such a caring individual!

Ry T.

Grandmaster Herbert is a great instructor and very patient. He’s been teaching us self defense on Zoom and it’s quite a work out. His explanations are easy to understand and he provides feedback on your practice to help you perfect your technique and skill level.
The classes are informative and has given me more confidence. He emphasizes that practice is crucial to your success. People who live in NY are fortunate to have him and their instructors teach self defense.

I am from Melbourne, Australia and have just started today. I already feel like I’m part of a family and the last time I had that feeling was when I started Taekwondo 25 yrs ago. These guys have been extremely welcoming and friendly and have allowed me to train within their club from half way across the world I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you world martial arts centre. You’re the best can’t wait to go for my first grading and move up in ranks.

Natalie H.

Thank you for the great thought and care in putting this newsletter together. It gave me an understanding of the rich history and culture of WMAC. It is evident that great sacrifices were made and I know it was not in vain. I know that it will return to you hundred folds. My son, Lincoln, loves the classes, when I take him, he doesn't want to leave! He is looking forward to progressing to black belt.

I wanted to let you know that you have an avid supporter of this program. I thank you and your staff for the tremendous work, diligence, and care in fostering the development of the students.

I look forward to partnering with you and for my son to flourish and progress in your program not physically but also mentally and spiritually.

The World Martial Arts Center has been a prominent part of my life for the last 20 years. I can't possibly articulate everything this place means to me and what Sabumnim D. Herbert has done for me and to the rest of our community, but his generosity changes everyone around him. I have seen him sponsor students who can not afford lessons, give food and furniture to families in need who he just met, and give countless hours as a mentor and advisor to his hundreds of students and thousands of former students. I have witnessed him take children (and adults!) struggling with anger, indifference, confidence, or a lack of direction under his wing and turn them completely around with focus, discipline, and purpose. His phone almost never stops ringing because he is always there for anyone who needs him. Not only did he officiate our wedding, but he saved the day by closing the school and letting us use the space when our outdoor wedding rained out.

I had previously studied different styles of MA for about 10 years (2 black belts) before I found this place. I was really cautious and skeptical at fist but was won over in my first class. I was impressed and humbled by people who had been training with Master Herbert for only 2 or 3 years and the black belts there, forget about it. They were easily comparable to people I've seen with 2nd or 3rd degree ranks. I came to realize that many of the people there really took it seriously. While there were (and still are) many casual students who came in 2 or 3 times a week, Master Herbert created an environment where many others were coming 5, 6, or even 7 days a week and taking multiple classes on a single day. I've never seen a martial arts school where the students were so dedicated.

The master definitely has a different way of running a class that I think makes some people uncomfortable. Based on my previous, very traditional experience, I sometimes felt he didn't warm us up enough before getting into things, or threw too much material at a class at once, but I quickly realized that he knew way more about it than I did. He knows a ton about the physiology of warming up a class and can talk about the science of doing it for hours. He is also really good at reading people and at pushing people a little past their comfort level, but at the same time maintaining a very safe learning environment. I've never been injured except by my own mistakes.

The master's skill level is really exceptional. He's been training all his life and knows many different systems of martial arts, not just HapKiDo, and incorporates it into his classes and curriculum. It's not like Tuesday is Tae Kwon Do day or anything like that, but you'll see sprinklings of Judo, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Escrima, and others in the material. It's really a very broad and extensive curriculum. However, what's even more impressive than the skill and knowledge is the style of teaching. In some ways very traditional, in some ways very modern. It just works, and master Herbert also makes a point to often explain why he teaches things a certain way or in a certain order. He does as much to teach his instructors how to teach as he does how to execute technique.

Great, clean, safe facilities. Good equipment. HUGE beautiful space. Nothing like it in the city that I have seen.

WMAC is the Real Deal! I have been studying martial arts for over 30 years and as school owner myself I know the difference. That is why I travel from out of state to study with the best. Master Herbert has taken my martial arts skills to the next level. The instructors at WMAC love what they do and it shows. The environment is friendly, non intimidating and professional. The school is amazingly clean and welcoming. Not only will you get the highest quality martial arts training but you will get a new outlook on life. Master Herbert is an amazing philosopher and life coach and will definitely open your eyes to new possibilities. I highly recommend checking out this amazing studio!

Ellen L.

At WMAC you'll learn to defend yourself, get a fantastic workout, and reap many other benefits -- a great community, improved mental sharpness and memory from the constant learning, increased confidence, and a mental, physical, and spiritual practice that you have with you in every aspect of your life, not just in the dojang. And it is for students of all ages -- I was 47 when I joined, more than 20 years ago.

C. S.

WMAC is an amazing place. I was a student many years ago and I didn't know that I would return so many years later. I was in search for a martial arts school for my daughter in our borough of Staten Island. Many of the schools seemed more like childcare centers. The children were not disciplined. The instructors had no control over the classes etc. Frustrated with my findings, I made the decision to visit WMAC in Brooklyn. It's been two years and I don't regret it at all. Although it's s bit of a travel for us, it is well worth it. The children are disciplined and well supervised and their curriculum is world class. The facility is great and well equipped. The staff is polite and professional. I would highly recommend the World Martial Arts Center to both children, teens and adults.

Nancy V.

WMAC is a great martial arts school. The people are genuine and caring. The skills I've learned are more than just physical... spiritually and mentally I've grown as a person. If you're a newbie or a seasoned martial artist there is something here for you too. If you want to learn self defense skills and an empowered confidence in yourself... this is the best place to be. The news is full of stories of women who are victimized by an attack during a routine walk home from work. As a woman I became more mindful of these incidents and wanted to know I could handle myself in any given situation. I discovered the warrior that lives within and how empowering that is.Take a class and see for yourself.

Nara P.

This was my first time trying martial arts and I am really glad that I chose the World Martial Arts Center!

I signed up for a trial month, which I found on their website. It's a very traditional environment - you take your shoes off at the door and you bow to your teachers and fellow students, but what they teach is genuine. There are so many fake martial arts schools out there that hire teachers with questionable credentials. At this school, I was really surprised to see that the instructors really deeply understood the material, from concept to application. The classes were tough (I sweat a puddle in each class) and covered a lot of material. I learned Tiger 1 and Tiger 2 (I think they're called forms or Poomsae or Kata), basic defense drills, and several kicking and punching techniques. I also learned how to spar, through this drill called "two kick". The classes really encouraged me to rise up to the challenge and be my best self. I guess that's the point of learning martial arts right?

Murali S.

Fantastic place to learn martial arts with an emphasis on complete (body, mind, spirit) training. Very welcoming to new students and a genuine interest from higher belts (including black belt) in all students' progress. For example, I couldn't make it for several weeks because of injuries (from skiing) and work schedules. After a few weeks, I got a call from one of the black belts to check whether I was doing ok.

Great diverse cross-section of NY-ers, both in the adults and kids. There are many whole families that train here, which speaks to the open and friendly environment. The master (aka Sabumnim) is a true martial arts master, in that he has an enormous knowledge of hapkido, a desire to pass on that knowledge and a big heart. For me, it is telling how he is always able/eager to adapt techniques for me (having limited use of one arm) so that I can learn what works for me. Safety comes first, and everyone, especially instructors are mindful of potential injuries or physical limitations. I always feel great, refreshed and grateful after training here.

Techniques are taught in a thoughtful manner, with appropriate variation and details for each skill level. The hapkido belt system ensures continuous learning, and mastery of techniques. The warmups are fun, with a balance of building strength, endurance, and flexibility.

There is very little that I would change, maybe slightly nicer changing rooms? All in all, I hope to train here and be a part of this great dojang for many years to come.

Mary F.

Joining WMAC was definitely one of the best life decisions I've made! I joined the school more than 10 years ago, when I was a high school student. I came into the school wanting to learn self-defense techniques but I'm grateful to have learned a lot more than that. Martial arts has allowed me to grow stronger not only physically but mentally and emotionally, into a confident adult. I've been able to apply the lessons I learned on the mat to situations in everyday life. The master of the school, Sabumnim, has a way of seeing his students' full potential and gives them the environment to grow into their best selves. The instructors of the school are also excellent, some who've been training at WMAC for more than 20 years. Not only are they patient with their students but they are also wise and knowledgeable - I'm deeply inspired by them! Furthermore, WMAC is not just a "gym" but a community, a place that brings together diverse groups of people. I've met many wonderful, kind and generous people training at the school, some who are my closest friends today. I highly recommend this martial arts school - not only will you get a great workout and learn to protect yourself but you'll be a part of a wonderful community and be able to fulfill your full potential!

John R.

I've been in the Martial Arts for over 20 years. I can't say that I've done it all or know it all, if anything that's the furthest thing from the truth. Martial Arts is a very vast world. However, I do know the techniques you will learn at WMAC will help you survive one day. The people you meet here come from all walks of live. You will make life long friends here, that I can guarantee. I discovered this school around 2004 or 2005, and I am very fortunate I did. I LOVE this school. The schedule is very flexible - you can train morning, noon and night. The Instructors are certified by our Master and he makes sure you are getting your dose of discipline, mat work, self defense, forms, kicking drills, weapons and the list goes on and on.

We are a Hapkido school however, we venture into other neighborhoods to get a well rounded curriculum. SaBuNim is well versed in Sword, Judo and Kumite Ryu Jujitsu. By the way, I am sure his knowledge extends past what I've just mentioned. He is very gifted, caring and definitely loves his students. He feeds us the physical but also the spiritual.

Everyone has their own preference of what they want out of Martial Arts. Check us out - we just might be a match! If not, you will find your way in your own time. Best of luck in your search of the "WAY".

Chris K.

This is the best martial arts school I have ever attended. I have studied many different martial arts over the years, but my involvement with the World Martial Arts Center and SaBumNim Herbert was the most rewarding and fulfilling that I have ever experienced. If you want to learn a classic martial art that also takes into account how to apply those skills to the real world, this is the school for you. Master Herbert is the real deal and the other senior instructors are not only highly skilled practitioners of Hapkido, but they also know how to teach and help the students. Approach your training with an open mind, be open to all the different things that can be learned at this school, and you will be rewarded with with knowledge and physical skills that cannot be learned anywhere else.

Lisa L.

I have trained in different styles of martial arts and have found Hapkido to be the most well-rounded. Sabumnim (Master) Herbert is one of the most knowledgeable and talented instructors of any martial art that you will find in New York. His method of teaching allows students to advance rapidly in their skill and understanding. The training here honestly improved my life in many ways, including my personal fitness, overall health, as well as the confidence to go after my life goals.

James W.

World Class Instruction...train here or waste time and money somewhere else only to find out after a few years you should've trained at World Martial Arts Center.

Maurisha D.

This school is nurturing, inviting and supportive! The instructors and the teaching is first class. World Martial Arts Center has helped me through pregnancy; helped me bounce back after the birth of my son and continues to keep me in shape. They provided the outlet that I needed. With so many class times, I was still able to fit it in while finishing my Master's. I am motivated to keep coming back (5 years so far and loving it). I not only learn how to defend myself and stay in shape, I also learn about balancing my life! Thank you WMAC!

Ralph M.

I have been a member of World Martial Art Center Arts for over 20 years. This is more than just another Martial Art School; this is a family that strives to make each member the best person they can be in all aspects of their life. WMAC takes a holistic approach to Martial Arts which includes self-defense, techniques, forms, weapons and meditation. Sabumnim David L. Herbert has been an instrumental figure, mentor and special person to me and has had helped guide me though different phases of my life. In addition to learning Hapkido and self-defense, I have also gained a great deal of self-confidence, respect, self-awareness and integrity. As a new father, I can't wait for the day until my son is old enough to join. I strong recommend considering WMAC in your martial art journey....

Elorie T.

When I entered the WMAC on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, the atmosphere that was before me, in terms of the activity, the decorum, and the grace with which I was allowed to embrace made me forget that I was an 'older woman.' Although I have had various experiences in sporting activities, my heart just knew that I was doing the right thing when I decided to join the martial arts center right on the spot. I did not need any persuading because of the way I was greeted and treated by the students and the master of the dojang, Sabumnim David Herbert.
My life has changed drastically because of what I have been taught and trained to do in terms of the art of Hapkido. I have a confidence I have never ever dreamed I would have, ever. It is important to have a sense of confidence and peace among the unknown. I have found the terra firma longed for...

John U.

I was here some time ago and found it to be a very structured and authentic Martial Arts school. The instructors were knowledgeable, patient and focussed. I don't think there is a better place to learn real self-defense skills in a safe environment than WMAC.

Frederick N.

If you're looking for the best martial art school (it's actually much more than this), this is the place to go. I used to train there back in 2001 and was impressed by the way students are welcomed and treated with respect. Coming from France and having lived in Germany, I trained in several different dojo/dojang, but this one is incredibly richer in all aspects (quality of the Masters, teachers and students, super serious and strong training based an incredibly large and greatly structured curriculum including greatly efficient defense techniques, many forms including stick, sword, fan, cane, etc.). There is no ego or battle for power or grade, only kindness and professionalism. I came back last November, and I was so happy to see old fellow students and masters who spent time with me even though I was there for a few days and was out of shape. Many people there were already there 10 to 20 years ago, to me, that's the best sign of dedication and quality. Sabumnim Master Herbert knows how to be surrounded with and retain amazing people. Here, you don't just learn martial arts, you learn how to succeed in life. WMAC is great family community, supportive, trustful, helpful. Don't hesitate one second, you have no idea how lucky you are, if this place is in your reach…

Chungsanim Jill B.

I have been a student here for over 20 years. Whatever you are looking for in your life can be found here at WMAC. Now that I have moved away, this is always my first stop when I'm back in NYC for a visit. This place is is like a home to me. Highly recommended!

Michael O.

I have been training at the World Martial Arts Center for about 5 years. Before coming here, I had trained in the styles of Kung Fu and Aikido.
From the very first day that I walked in to audit a session (at which Master Herbert smiled, walked over and warmly shook my hand) to this day, I have felt only love, respect and sincere concern for not only my safety, but that I am constantly learning and improving at all times.
WMAC is a highly intelligent school run by a highly intelligent Master. Master Herbert has created a curriculum that covers all aspects of Hapkido...physical, spiritual, mental and emotional...Instructors are not permitted to teach until they have demonstrated, beyond a doubt, that they have embodied the technique/form that is being taught. You will not be allowed to languish at this school...when you are on the mat, you are expected to learn, train smart, and constantly improve...while practicing in a safe manner, with respect for your limits and the limits of the other students... at all times. If you want to learn ALL aspects of Hapkido...this is the school to be a part of.

Kristin W.

I trained at WMAC for 10 years and it honestly changed my life. So much more than an intense workout, the training promotes mental and emotional growth and has a way of bringing out the best in people. Some awesome things about the school:

- Master Herbert is an internationally respected grandmaster who is an expert teacher and inspiring coach dedicated to bringing out the best in his students;
- the training is very structured, you will make your way through a curriculum, building up skills, but at the same time, every class is a surprise and you always get an amazing workout;
- the school is definitely a caring community, people leave their egos at the door, we all work together and help each other out; everything from training buddies to lifelong friendships to marriages have happened between the students here;
- diversity in the school is amazing... kindness and inclusivity reign;
- equal ratio of men and women, very feminist vibe, women's strength is assumed and at least half of the instructors are women;
- the instructors aren't just top notch in terms of skills and teaching abilities, but they are generous and kind;
- it's nothing like a gym but rather like a beautiful temple with plants and hanging scrolls and sculptures, always clean and often smelling of incense... a place that elevates you

Really, I could go on. The only reason I'm not still training there is because I'm on the west coast now. And I can say that I have been searching for another martial arts school that even comes close to WMAC, and sadly I can't find it. If you have the opportunity to train at WMAC, just do it.

Craig H.

The World Martial Arts Center has been life changing for me. I have lost 40 pounds since joining 6 months ago, and have a renewed energy for life. The instructors and students alike are friendly and encouraging, and made me feel welcome right away. The best part of the WMAC, however, is the extremely practical form of martial arts that I have learned. Besides punches and kicks, I have learned an assortment of joint locks and throws that can help me in any situation I face. The focus on real-time self-defense skills is huge! If you are looking for a martial arts school that will challenge you, but that will prepare you for any circumstance you face in life, the WMAC is the place for you!

Kyosanim Lena V.

Hapkido for me has been life transforming, and with it the study and practice of Taoism has been neverendingly profound. The more I learn and go deeper into the practice, the more I realize its infinite vastness - how far I’ve come yet how much I still have to learn- the practice of self-improvement and the pursuit of self knowledge never ends. For me, there has been nothing like it — it is a portal to free flow state and connection to the unified field — the one — the way - the essential energy of life. Tao as the great mother - and the one as the son. I owe so much to my Grandmaster for his guidance and teachings not only to me, but to my entire family. Thank you Sabunim!

Rej J.

I have been practicing Hapkido (a Korean martial arts) at the World Martial Arts Center (WMAC) and it has been an integral part of my life. WMAC, led by Sabumnim (aka Grandmaster David Herbert), has transformed thousands of lives over the past 30+ years, including mine. About 10 years ago, I was excited to restart my martial arts training (from learning Taekwondo as a child) to learning a discipline that had more of a self defense element to it. Little did I know that the biggest gift I would receive was not the physical but rather spiritual and mental. This is not to dismiss the incredibly comprehensive system of martial arts skills I have learned throughout the years. However, the road to getting my black belt (several years ago) opened my eyes to start a deep self reflective journey that initiated the growth of my spiritual self. Our Grandmaster has created and cultivated an environment in our dojang (school) for students to challenge, break open, and expand various parts of themselves for our growth. I can genuinely say, this is not just any martial arts school.

Unfortunately, these unprecedented times have made it impossible for most small businesses to continue to operate and WMAC is no exception. The school will have to shut down and the only way it will be able to reopen when it's safe is if we can raise the necessary start-up funds. Your donation will go towards a new school, start-up operating costs, and renovations that will create an oasis of peace, fulfillment, and empowerment for hundreds of students from 5 to 75 years old.

By supporting a local business headed by a Black leader during this time, you are also making an investment into the future that is vital. WMAC is one of the most diverse and welcoming spaces I’ve ever been part of with students of different ages, ethnicities, races, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, genders, socio-economic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. It's also one of the very few martial arts schools that has as many women leaders/teachers as men. This speaks to the wisdom of our Grandmaster who deeply understands the importance of yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) energy/presence in all aspects of martial arts practice.

I would be grateful for your support to help my martial arts school survive. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. Any donation is meaningful and would help secure the future of WMAC and the lives it will continue to change.

Kat G.

My friend Mary, a Blackbelt at WMAC, invited me to visit the school. From the first day on the mat, I knew it was where I belonged. I hadn't heard of Hapkido before but it seemed to have so many elements of all of the popular martial arts and so much more. From flowing forms like Kung fu and Taichi to powerful and strong forms like Taekwondo and Karate. And there's a multitude of practical self-defense techniques perfectly designed for smaller people because it teaches the tactic of using the opponent’s form against them much like Aikido, Judo and traditional Jujitsu. It also has meditation and physical and mental development, much like yoga, with an emphasis on developing a balance between personal peace and personal power. But also what blew me away was the number of women. Many times the women outnumbered the men, and were also as or more powerful and fierce than even some of the strongest guys.

After a year into my training, Sabumnim helped me chart the next few steps on my life path and said that my soul had natural gifts to be a healer. After creating a plan of action for the next 4 years, my life took an incredible turn for the better. I became a licensed Acupuncturist, completed my doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, developed a profound meditation practice, received my Blackbelt, became an instructor, and in spite of all the chaos that’s happening all over the world and in America, I find myself to be a very happy, fulfilled and grateful person for how my life has blossomed, and how my journey in the martial arts has affected that.

Senior Instructor Douglas G.

World Martial Arts Center has been a solid supporting element through my last fifteen years as a Black male working in New York City (now retired). During those years, I was an administrator within the New York City Department of Education, an Assistant Principal of Science. I earned this status after completing the necessary requirements and the on-the-job experience teaching science for more than twenty years in one of the outstanding High Schools in Brooklyn, Midwood H.S. After being interviewed and appointed to Prospect Heights H.S., I was introduced to the other side of the educational system. This school was in need of much support; the student body and some of the teaching staff were the problems. The school had students struggling with academics and a mix of teachers who honored their profession alongside others who took advantage of the situation and got paid to do “teen baby-sitting”.

The general student body was challenging and somewhat threatening, the in-your-face type who had trouble with anger management. After several close encounters, I decided to learn martial arts as a means of protecting myself. I was interviewed by Sabumnim and I explained my situation to him. He stated that my study of Hapkido at his school would give me the upper hand I needed. With this new confidence and training I was able to be instrumental in the slow change of this “problem” school into a more successful high school. I was not stirred by threatening students nor quieted by the union and loud mouth teachers who expected to continue taking advantage of the system and do little to address real issues in the classroom. The World Martial Arts Center became an enabling force in my life. I am thankful for the training and the social interaction amongst such a racially, ethnically, religiously, socioeconomically mixed group of individuals as those at this school.

At WMAC, you will learn martial arts, learn about yourself, and become part of a supportive community of like-minded practitioners. Founder and owner Sabumnim David L. Herbert is an insightful teacher, role model, and compassionate spirit. You will learn much from him about martial arts and how to be a good person. WMAC offers classes for all levels and ages. Its summer camp for kids is especially notable for its quality programming.

Kurt C.

My son was given a citizenship award at school and Sabumnim was so emphatic about the fact that it should be celebrated even though my son hadn’t mentioned it during the dojang afterschool program. Sabumnim asked to take a picture with us and the award, and shared it with the WMAC community. This is a prime example of not only what Sabumnim stands for, but why my wife and I KNEW this was the school and the Master with whom my son should begin his martial arts journey with.

Prior to joining WMAC, I had reached out to a few schools when my son was 4 and a half years old, and they all said that they didn’t start training children that early. Undaunted, I came to WMAC. I’ll never forget the day in 2015 when I came to the dojang on a Saturday afternoon and Sabumnim was just about to leave. We talked for about 45 minutes.

I expressed my desire to have my son start training early, as I wished I had, and how important it was for young Black boys to develop not just martial arts training but the discipline, awareness, and sensitivity to equip themselves for the unique challenges they would face. We were speaking each other’s language as Brooklyn-bred men of color. I knew this was the place for us. To my joy and surprise, the diversity of dojang students and instructors was more than I ever expected. The adaptation to needs, skill sets, and particular challenges has been a blessing and a joy. The Chungsanims even motivated me to get back to my own training regardless of my physical challenges (which had been my personal crutch for years). I can’t for a minute imagine what we would do without WMAC, Sabumnim and the community. #Lifechanging #necessary #cantdowithout

Da-Hea A.

I have been studying at the dojang since January of this year. At first, I was only looking for a way to be active and take care of my physical health, but the dojang ended up becoming much more than a place to workout. When I started, there were a lot of moving pieces in my life; key ones being a breakup, new responsibilities at work, and moving into a new apartment. Taking classes at the dojang became the only time where my mind was able to be still and focus on one thing. It was an immense relief to be able to give my mind a break from running on full pistons all the time.

When our dojang had to close its doors due to Covid, I was worried that my new found mental discipline would be lost, so I was really scrambling to figure out how to continue my practice, even though I did not think I knew enough as a yellow belt! Thankfully, the dojang was able to continue to serve its community via online classes. Unexpectedly, I have also been blessed to have other members reach out to me outside of classes, taking a personal interest in my growth and development as a martial artist. The freely given offering of their time, advice, and mentorship shows me that being a part of the WMAC community extends far beyond the walls of the dojang, and that the community is always reaching out, caring for every member of their community, no matter how long the person has been a part of the dojang.

There are very few communities out there that are constantly reaching out, bringing light into dark places, showing people that they are more capable, powerful, stronger than they think, building up character alongside physical skill, knowing that martial arts is not only about technique, but rather, it is a lifestyle filled with understanding and compassion.

WMAC has become my family. My son and I have trained with the incredible teachers there for over 10 years. As a 50+ year old woman, I walk down the street more confident and aware. Physically, I am stronger. I have never been injured during my training, but when I fell bowling (ugh), the strength in my tendons and my skill from leaning how to fall prevented my injuries from being much less severe than they could have been. Mentally, I know how to find inner peace, and I am calmer and more confident.

I highly recommend WMAC if you really want to learn how to have a stronger mind, body and spirit. I can't begin to tell you want a positive impact the hard work and commitment has made. But, if you're looking to just show up for a couple of years and be handed your trophy black belt, then this won't be the place for you or your child. Sure, you can tell you friends you're a black belt, but you won't understand was it means.

Make a commitment to change your life. Master Herbert teaches not only martial arts, but how to be a better person in the community, and in life. I can't thank him enough and the rest is the teachers. They are the kindest, most wonderful people on the planet.Senior Instructor Pete C.

Fifteen years ago I attended the Atlantic Antic street fair and met JP, one of the instructors at the World Martial Arts Center. He invited me into the dojang and introduced me to Sabumnim and Hapkido. As a former member of the Navy with martial arts training, I was able to immediately see the value of training at WMAC. Since that day, I have been training towards mastering this martial arts form. It has been an exciting journey learning weapons, strikes, throws, grappling, many forms, and defense techniques, learning how to maintain flexibility, focus and increased power in my locks. I am looking forward to continue my training towards my next belt of Third Dan.

The World Martial Arts Center is a great school. I have been training there for nearly 8 years. Not only does it offer physical fitness and self defense skills, it gives you life skills and an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and develop a greater awareness of the world around you. Also, it's fun!

As a long time student of Master Herbert (since 1997), I can testify that WMAC is a true and unique martial art school.

Master Herbert's WMAC is committed to its student's true progress; their ego is not flattered; the attention is sincere; from day one, students are solicited to grow and provided the means and support to do so. The curriculum is so broad and so deep that one may find many areas to excel: forms, self defense, grappling, with weapons, against weapons, meditation, bag kicking and punching. No stone is left unturned.
One has dozens of classes to choose from, every day, morning, noon, afternoon, evening and weekends.

I am editing a review I wrote 5 years ago. In the meantime, I have seen awkward young people become strong confident adults, others losing weight, growing muscles and learning new skills.

This place is life changing, positive and has a stellar sensei. If you want to be a success start here. You can tell the commitment level by the number of advanced students ..black belts.. friendly, helpful and patient while you learn your tiger one and defense moves. I checked out a number of dojos before sending my son here, and then I joined myself - that’s how good it is.

I first walked into the World Martial Arts Center 6 years ago, at the age of 13. You could say that I was an 8th grader with commitment issues, and I wasn't sure how I felt about WMAC's deep curriculum. Of course, I was already familiar with the school and Sabumnim’s practices, which have been shaping my entire family for the last 25 years, from Kyosanim Lena to my little brother, Valentino, who started at the age of just 4. But while I hesitated, Sabumnim saw a leader in me right away. I was advised not to enroll in the children’s program and was encouraged to train alongside the black belts within my first week.

There is no other organization in my life that I have a stronger relationship with than our beloved Dojang on Atlantic Avenue. Sabumnim transformed me from a shy little kid to an instructor with 5 years of experience, helping kids discover their potential as I have mine. This place is more than a school, it is our home, it is our mirror, it’s our test of self empowerment. I can’t emphasize enough what WMAC and our WMAC family means to me and to countless families in New York City.

From the moment I stepped into the World Martial Arts Center, I knew it was a special place. I was welcomed immediately by its diverse student body and Grandmaster Herbert was always warm and genuine. From the beginning, he encouraged me out of my comfort zone, and his belief in me helped me to tackle so many things both on the mat and off. I took a long hiatus from WMAC to focus on training jiujitsu with my husband, but the school continued to connect with and care about me, never asking for anything, but simply sharing support. When I returned to a class recently, the warm smiles greeted me and it felt like I had never been away. At WMAC you're more than just membership dollars, you're a human being no matter who you are or what your circumstance. It is imperative that this special place be able to continue on.

I set foot into WMAC in New York on Broadway and Houston above Duane Reade over 30 years ago. The school has since moved to Brooklyn. What I learned has given me the strength and self confidence to go through life and face each day knowing that I can accomplish anything I want. What an awesome group of teachers and masters. The best for sure.

WMAC offers martial arts training to adults and children in a unique environment which supports and encourages individual self-growth on many levels. Regardless of one's purpose for training there is no doubt that consistent practice will truly lead to improved physical, mental and emotional state. I have met many students of all ages who have shared their personal stories since joining WMAC which have been inspiring.

Aditi J.

This is a great school. I've been practicing for a few years and it's changed my life in positive ways - I have more discipline, confidence and it's spilled into all parts of my life. The school fosters a feeling of camaraderie and cooperation, the other students are always willing to work with you and help you learn. The Master teaches real world defense as well as ways to become better in your life. I highly recommend it. It's at least worth coming in for a trial class and seeing if this type of martial art is for you. You won't regret it.

Jonathan J.

This is a great school. The school master and the teachers are dedicated and highly skilled; the training is thorough, challenging, and effective. The World Martial Arts Center is not only a wonderful place to learn martial arts at a high level, but it is a welcoming community that I feel proud to be a part of. There have been so many days where I feel drained after work, but after I attend a class, I always feel so much better. I simply love being a part this community and learning Hapkido at a very high level. When I first started as a white belt, I never imagined I would get as far as I have, but now that I have achieved a level of skill, I am excited to improve upon it and take it to the next level. WMAC has made it possible for me. Put simply, it is a wonderful school.

Diana S.

I joined the World Martial Arts Center 1 1/2 years ago. As a complete beginner to martial arts, I was both intimidated and inspired by this world. In this short period of time the WMAC community has been incredibly patient and wonderful with me, easing me into the practice and HapKiDo has now become part of my everyday routine. The dojang is a place of true empowerment, strength and love.

WMAC is a New York City jewel! This school is a place to study serious martial arts in a rigorous, supportive, respectful and nurturing community. The skill and dedication of both the school's founder, Sabumnim David Herbert, and all of the incredible instructors who teach here is really amazing. As a student at WMAC for over 15 years, I was privileged to train with students of every age, physical ability and walk of life imaginable; visiting masters from around the world, children from around the block, cops, teachers, soldiers, nurses, artists, bankers ... you name it. Anyone who walks through the door is treated with respect and encouragement, and I have witnessed literally thousands of people learn to transform their own lives with the skills they learned here. If you watch the school's videos, those are all 100% real students and teachers taking real, actual classes and tests, and they give a pretty accurate impression of what the school is all about. If you are interested or curious, go to the school and watch, or better yet, take a trial class. Very highly recommended!

KenichiRo T.

An amazing place, you should totally go! There's plenty of equipment, enthusiastic and qualified instructors, and a wonderful sense of community. You will receive high-level training and individual attention. World Martial Arts Center exudes a feeling of openness and welcoming. Students of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures attend.

I studied at World Martial Arts Center for over 10 years. One of the things I liked most was the blend of traditional and modern. It felt like a living martial art, as opposed to rote training in orthodoxy. WMAC integrates the latest in sports medicine into the curriculum. On a physical level, the expert instruction is great. It may sound cliché, but you WILL feel more powerful and confident. And that's just the beginning! Later you'll go beyond the physical and increase your focus, persistence, and perseverance. The benefits are truly transferable to other areas of your life. Also, with further martial arts training, you will realize a deep sense of calm and peace.

Sabumnim Herbert, the school's founder, provides the right amount of challenge. He recognizes that everyone has a unique instrument and temperament, and will adjust the difficulty level accordingly. I get the feeling that he believes in the students more than they believe in themselves. He's kind, generous, and a great role model.

World Martial Arts Center is a place where one is able to be their best self. I'm grateful for my time spent there.

Laura B.

A life trajectory-changing haven - a cohesive community, supportive and empowering environment, and always-growing curriculum full of exciting challenges. The WMAC is where you will transform physically, mentally, and spiritually, gaining skills that are transferable to settings beyond the mats. My only regret is not joining sooner!

Isabel K.

WMAC is an excellent school, headed by one of the top teachers in the area. I have been a student at WMAC for more than 20 years, my training here helped me to stay healthy, focused and balanced. Beginners will be guided through the basics and will quickly see success with one technique building upon the next. It's like learning a language. In particular I like working with weapons such as knife, sword or staff. Everybody no matter the age or athletic predisposition will find their space and will benefit from the physical and mental improvements stemming from the beautiful art of Hapkido.

Ona W.

This place is a home away from home for me. The Sabumnim is an inspirational and magnetic person who has the ability to see your strengths even before you do. The direct access you have to him is reason alone to go to this school.

There are ample classes to fit every busy schedule and dedicated and passionate instructors. They care whether you succeed and will stay, even during off-hours, to help you move forward.

There is no place like it.

Jerome D.

I can proudly say I have been a student of the World Martial arts Center for over 30 years and the reason is I deserved better. Finding a great teacher is a hard task but you just have to know where to look. Master Herbert has been leading this school for more than 3 decades, and he is a diamond amongst gems. His passion for the martial arts is obvious, his knowledge is tested and proven, his skills are second to none, his integrity is rock solid. Super friendly atmosphere where people can thrive and better themselves.

Ygnacio C.

I've been taking classes at WMAC since I was 11 years old. Sabumnim David Herbert, to me, is more than just a Martial Arts Master, he has been a role model to me since I was a child, someone that I could talk to and get advice from. And now that I have 2 daughters, I was sure that I didn't want anyone but Sabumnim to teach them the same confidence, character, and self-esteem he taught me as a child. Everyone at WMAC is like family, and very respectful and caring. WMAC is more than just a dojang, it is my second home.

James C.

For the last 5 years I have trained with my son and daughter at the World Martial Arts Center with Sabumnim, Master David Herbert. The life-changing lessons I continue to study there are transforming me physically, but also mentally, spiritually and emotionally. After nearly 40 years in operation, the pandemic has forced the school to close the doors of their physical location, and I want to work to help the school re-open, and be reborn as an oasis of training and growth.

The school has launched a fundraiser called “Rise Up”. The goal is ambitious, but rising to the challenge is something we have been training for. So I want help from my friends, family and anyone else reading this. Please consider donating to this fund, whatever amount you can. If you are not able to contribute financially, please share the word.

Senior Instructor Carol G.

WMAC has been my haven for 26 years and Master Herbert my mentor, as he has been for so many of his students for the last 33 years. May he continue for many more years to come. Mudo

John W.

This school helps everyone who walks through their doors. It is perhaps the only place where mutual respect reigns among all people in a city where that is too seldom the case. Neither age, nor race, nor money rule here. Respect rules here due to the example set by Sabunim, the teachers, and every student. We must ensure this beacon of community, love, and fortitude rises like a Phoenix from the ashes of Covid.

Marva G.

World Martial Arts Center brings families together and joins strangers into lifelong friendships.

The very first time my brother Robert came to the World Martial Arts Center, with a white belt freshly out of the plastic, I encouraged him to take an advanced class. Well -- not only did he enjoy the class – he went on to excel and win top prizes in martial arts tournaments. His excellence propelled my progress. Today, our martial arts practice continues to be a part of our mutual interests.

This shared connection is a result of the foundations that are taught at the World Martial Arts Center. This school is a community of excellent teachers and students, working together to build mental and physical acumen, not only for those moments ‘on the mat’ – but for life’s journey.

A life treasure for those of us who have found the way there.

The Master told me, “Always say to yourself, Nothing is wrong here.” These words have stayed with me, and allowed me to rise above challenging situations.

Elijah G.

I attended WMAC for many years before moving to another state. My years there were pivotal to my personal growth. Leaders are grown and empowered. The work they are doing and its impacts to society can't be understated. MUDO!

Jennifer R.

I started training in my mid-40s at this amazing Martial Arts School. Changed my life for the better. Sadly, like many schools and businesses, they are in bad financial straights due to the Pandemic. Through the Pandemic they have offered regular virtual Hap Ki Do classes and meditation sessions, etc. Spirit-saving and health-enriching for me and my kids!

It's the most diverse community I've ever been a part of (lifestyle, economic background, ethnicity, religion, age, gender etc). I love the positive energy, the environment of acceptance and equity, the challenging aspects of training are strength-building, and what a supportive community! And of course there are the self-defense skills! And this is a #blackownedbusiness, a totally separate reason to support them (our Grandmaster is African American). If you are in a position to help, please consider it.

Susan F.

WMAC is so much more than a martial arts school. It’s a community that grew out of Grandmaster Herbert’s generosity, love, and tireless work - not to mention his expertise and deep understanding of martial arts. I met him in 1985 when he had $38 in his pocket and a small group of students who didn’t mind training in odd spaces like a borrowed loft and a public park. My sister, Claire, was one of the first students to earn a blackbelt under Grandmaster Herbert. She encouraged my other sister, Lynn, and me to join the community because she knew that WMAC offered the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits that would shape our lives in a positive way. Lynn earned a blackbelt in 2001, and I got mine in 2012.

Grandmaster Herbert has been a tremendous supporter of social action, often offering discounted or free training to people in need and promoting the work of other social justice organizations. The disruptions caused by COVID-19 have taken their financial toll on WMAC. Please support us during this challenging time so that Grandmaster Herbert and his team can continue sharing their teachings widely.

The dojang really feels like home, a safe place to go to and work out your problems whether by meditation or training hard. There are so many wonderful students and instructors here. Other than my actual home, this place feels like I belong.

My family and I have been a part of the WMAC family for years. My husband trained with Sabumnim as a teenager. Our 2 oldest started training when they were young as well, and now we have returned to train as a family of 5.

The training you receive here is mental and physical. I always say we came back home, because of the environment that has been created for us here. Sabumnim has always welcomed us and everyone who comes to the dojang with open arms and a smile.

Jacques-Phillipe P.

I come to you with a broad smile, imbued by our collective resilience in this time of global turmoil. If you’re like me, my experience training with Sabumnim has prepared me to take on and thrive despite COVID-19 and quarantine. We have been taught to get up, stay up, and keep up. By putting us through the proverbial “fire" on the mat he has equipped us for the toughest that world can bring at us— physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. When it comes to martial arts I have a great deal of context. I started training at age 3 and I’m now 43. I competed domestically and internationally and I’ve come across so many instructors. None bring more of themselves to the craft than Sabumnim. We go to the Dojang at 6a he’s there. We go at noon he’s there. We go at 10p he’s there. We go on Tuesday he’s there and we go on Sunday he’s there. We don’t go for a while and he’s at our house. Or we think he’s not there, but he calls us to correct a form. We will have to travel across dimensions of time in order to find that level of dedication and that is because Sabumnim brings the best of martial arts to us and he has been doing so for 36 years.

When asked about my greatest contribution to society I respond without hesitation, my children, Soleil and Jacques-Maxime. They represent the best of me, and those who came before me, and I’m extremely particular with respect to how, where and with whom they spend their time. They have been coming to WMAC since they were 6 and 4 respectively. They are now 15 and 11. The lessons Sabumnim have imparted upon them will help me sleep better at night when they are facing all that the world has to offer— the good, the bad and the ugly. They have learned how to follow instruction. They have learned the importance of precision. They have learned the interplay between yin and yang energy. They have learned resilience, confidence and humility. They are appreciative of all that they have and they respect their parents and their traditions. This is all woven in the fabric of WMAC and the master tailor is Sabumnim.

Our Dojang is a refuge for the downtrodden, a launching pad for the gifted, and a home for all who come to it with an open heart and pure purpose. At the center of the magic is our Sabumnim. He now finds himself at the epicenter of the quarantine fall out. It has already been 6 months and fitness centers will be the last to reopen. This puts significant pressure on the finances of the WMAC and it is up to us, the benefactors of Sabumnim’s largess, to ensure we not only survive, but thrive. Close your eyes for a moment and let me share my vision with you. I see a future where our Dojang is even bigger, more well equipped, more students, more teachers, more accessible with our new digital competencies, more humble and strengthened due to the lessons of this global pandemic, more revenues, and more sound financial situation in order to endure any future market dislocations. In this future we are traveling together and our bond is more firm because we locked hands to get through the challenges together.

I’m all in. What does that mean? It means I will contribute. It means I will tell all my friends and contacts to contribute. I will tell them to tell their friends to contribute. I will think expansively about anything I can offer in order to induce greater participation, i.e., consulting services, art, music, poetry, etc. I will do this immediately and I would be so grateful if you join me. Sabumnim often talks about the WEI— will, energy and intention. What I have described herein does not take a lot of time. It takes a commitment to the WEI. Please join me and let’s make quick work of this!

Love, Peace, Respect. Mudo.

Senior Instructor Nell C.

I started hapkido training at the World Martial Arts Center (WMAC) when I was 45. I sought to reboot my life after selling my business and was inspired by my daughter, Emily who had been taking classes for several years, as well as then older fierce women I watched on the mat.

Beyond the personal self-improvement found in many martial arts schools, WMAC is unique in the diverse community it fosters. During any given class you will see a cross demographic of races, ages, and genders. Joining this community, I broadened my social circle of 'tech buddies' to include people that I wouldn't typically meet: a prison guard, an FBI executive, a pothole repair worker, a short order cook. These interactions (which can be quite close) help bridge our society's divides. As a result, we are all more vulnerable, more humble, and more tolerant.

I love this community and miss it terribly. The pandemic has hit the school hard, leaving it in a deep financial hole. We don't know when the school will reopen, but we do know that it will need to be in a new location, rebuilding from the ground up. A special fundraiser aptly named 'Rise Up' is underway.

Darien R.

On behalf of my son Chayton, my family and I send our love and support. Grandmaster Herbert and his team of skilled instructors have been a guiding light in helping to shape our son into the respectful young man that he has become. This reminds me of the African proverb 'It takes a village to raise a child.' Though there are many martial arts schools out there, you will have an extremely hard time finding one with well-rounded support, love, and leadership. We have been a part of the World Martial Arts Center family for the past 5 years and look forward to many, many more.

Chungsanim Betty

I can say without even exaggerating, that my teacher Sabumnim David Herbert and the World Martial Arts Center gave me a real purpose to my life. It was 1997, and I was in a very transitional moment and then I found this oasis. The dojang has been a lifesaver not just for me, it has also helped thousands of students transform and step into their personal power. I would not be the person I am today if not for my teacher.

By supporting a local business headed by a Black leader, you are also making an investment into the future of the community. It is one of the most diverse and welcoming spaces I’ve ever been in with students of different ages, ethnicities, races, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, genders, socio-economic backgrounds and those with disabilities.

Senior Instructor Shira B.

I have had the incredible fortune of training at WMAC under Sabumnim David Herbert for nearly 20 years. I began as a young girl with low self-esteem and a soft voice. Very quickly, with the support of WMAC's exceptional instructors, I found my inner strength, developed confidence, and cultivated discipline that helped me achieve a 3rd degree black belt in HapKiDo. Sabumnim has created an unparalleled community and curriculum that supports people with diverse backgrounds, body types, and needs as they build their physical and mental strength. HapKiDo is one of the most multi-faceted martial arts, which makes training especially interesting and challenging. You will learn to defend yourself through hand and weapons techniques, kicking and punching, and grappling and falling. At the same time, you will learn to develop focus, awareness, and leadership through meditation, forms, and teaching. WMAC helps people realize their potential both in and out of the dojang. I often find that the skills I have learned as a student and instructor of HapKiDo help me to succeed in my professional and personal life. I urge anyone--at any age, with any body--to come to WMAC. You will be amazed by the many gifts it will bring to your life.

Janet R.

I have been training at World Martial Arts Center for over 10 years now. This is the place you want to start your journey. The quality of instruction is unprecedented. Beautiful dojang/ training center. Easy to get to. Atlantic/Pacific train stop. A diverse curriculum. And most of all a safe and constructive training atmosphere. We all work together. The children's program is the best in the NYC area. Take a trial class and get on the mat with us!

Cynthia N.

This school has been a huge part of my son's life since he was 5 yrs old. Master Herbert and all of the amazing staff has taught him leadership, focus, perseverance, and confidence.

Taty S.

The World Martial Arts Center will always be my martial arts home. It has changed my life in so many ways, and now it is changing my child's.

Baz B.

We will always be grateful for everything you have done for Baz. Please always count on us, we will continue to support you as much as we can, the same way you have supported our family always! Thank you!

WMAC is a wonderful place that makes a meaningful difference in a world that can often seem challenging. I am very grateful to the school and to Sabumnim for what WMAC taught me and what it continues to.

Kalpna B.

This is a phenomenal school. The quality and caliber of the school and the training is exceptional. It embodies mind, body and spirit. It is truly all about the flow. Learn how to defend yourself, have fun, use different weapons, in a safe environment. The trainers are also exceptional all rooting for you to succeed and do your best. It is a great school, community and family. You can't help but fall in love with the whole package.

Katja T.

I've been training at the WMAC for a couple of years now and I really enjoy it. The instructors are fabulous and always there to help you improve your martial arts and get you to the next level. They offer multiple classes every day which makes it easy for me to be able to attend class. It's a great school, I highly recommend it!

Ana H.

I've had the most incredible experience coming here to train. I've never been healthier or happier and so much of it is due to the phenomenal program and excellent instructors at this dojang. I never write reviews, but the World Martial Arts Center deserves the praise. If you're on the fence about it, give it a try for a week. It will be one of the best decisions you make, one that will change your life for the better.

Grandmaster SaBumNim David L. Herbert has been teaching HapKiDo, a Korean martial art, in New York City for about 30 years now. His school, The World Martial Arts Center, provides a high-level of training and instruction in weapons and open-hand forms and techniques, many of which are useful real-life self-defense skills. The school offers a safe and clean environment for morning, mid-day, and afternoon classes as well as an afternoon children’s program. It is also one of the few school in the area that is dedicated to serious training; it is not an assembly-line black-belt factory.

Gabriel B.

There are few places I know of where adults and children are truly taught martial arts in a way which is customized for the individual. WMAC offers not only a comprehensive martial arts program but allows the individual to learn and grow at a pace which is best for that student. Physical, mental and emotional growth are inevitable with consistent practice. The children's program is wonderful and the children's summer program is one of the best.

Danielle U.

Four years ago I was looking for a martial arts school for my son, who at the time was 7 years old. I did some research and found World Martial Arts Center, and I began bringing him to children’s classes every Saturday.

After a year of bringing my son every week to class, I decided to try a class myself. Participating as an adult student revealed an entirely different side of WMAC to me: I felt the power and encouragement of the devoted and highly-trained instructors, and even as a newcomer to the training floor I experienced the support and love of the other WMAC members who trained alongside me. Once I tried it, I knew that this is where I belonged, and I embarked on my own martial arts journey of personal growth and self-discovery.
Finding WMAC has been one of the best things to happen to me and my family. Training has not only helped me keep physically fit, but has opened realms of spiritual experience to me that I couldn’t have imagined.

On that Sunday afternoon four years ago, when I put on a white belt for the first time and walked onto the mats, I only thought about getting some exercise and sharing a physical activity with my son. I had no idea that the physical training was a doorway into a deep personal practice that has touched many parts of my life. It’s exciting to think that you, reading this review, might be on the threshold of undertaking a journey like mine.

Divine A.

This school is awesome! I am an avid, life-long martial artist and have been to quite a few schools. None of them compared to my experience at WMAC. The first thing I noticed was the level of respect. Not just for the master, but between students. While I trained here, I never felt like another student was out to hurt me. I cannot say the same for my experience at an MMA franchise.

Secondly, the instructors really know their stuff and each can show you 10 different variations on one technique. I was completely impressed (and that's not easy)! If you are looking for a safe, friendly place with excellent instructors - look no further!

Geoff J.

My granddaughter has been attending the children's program for the past five months and I've attended each session with her. The program and teachers have been phenomenal in bringing out her inner warrior. The confidence and poise she now exhibits is directly related to this school.

Shannon K.

I've studied Martial Arts and many styles since I was 6 yrs old. World Martial Arts Center is by far the most complete school I have trained at. Master Herbert and his entire team are incredible to new students, lovers of the arts, and the children program is unbelievable! My daughter, wife, and I all have been training her for 5 yrs now as this feels like our family as much as it is our Dojang to train and study. As small business owners in Brooklyn, we look forward to hosting our first team building activity here with all of our employees. Thank you Master David Herbert and World Martial Arts Center. Respectfully, The King Family

Lynn C.

World Martial Arts Center offers intense mixed martial arts training. Go to their website at happykicks.com to see videos that provide a good sample of the types of forms, techniques, and sparing we study. The school is serious but inclusive of all ages and abilities. Students are encouraged to move at their own pace. Although some of the techniques are challenging, teachers always supervise students to ensure the safety of the class.

I am surprised at some of the earlier reviews for this school. I have been training at WMAC for the past 5 years and go 4 to 5 times a week. I am a thin boned woman who started at the age of 45, and at 50 am a rather "fragile" martial artist -- yet I have never been hurt. The school is far from a factory and there is much individual attention doled out to all levels of student.

Yes the school is serious, but it has a wonderful, diverse community a people looking to develop their mind, body and spirit. I strongly recommend this school.

Nancy R.

I recently joined the World Martial Arts Center after being a trial student for a month. As a newbie in Martial Arts, I was at first a bit intimidated in class but I really had no reason to feel that way. All other students were incredibly encouraging and treated me with respect. The Master Teacher gave me and other new white belts special attention during our first classes, which was also very encouraging and motivatingAlso, I was given a beginner's training CD which holds valuable information for a white belt like myself. I especially liked the part were black belts were offering tips for beginners. Most importantly for me is that the World Martial Arts Center is not only a place were I can grow and learn on a physical level, but also on an emotional and spiritual level. That to me has incredible value.I hold the World Martial Arts Center, it's students and teachers in high esteem and I am very thankful to have found this school! I know I will be a student with this school for many years to come.
